What does a typical day look like as a National Accounts Manager?
No day is the same when working in National Accounts. Some days, I’m planning promotional campaigns or attending meetings. Other days it’s really hands-on and I’m attending trade shows and brand awareness days, or working alongside an Area Sales Manager. The versatility of the role is why I love what I do.
What drew you to Makita?
It was definitely a fantastic opportunity to work for a market-leading global brand, but the main driving force for me was learning about what a close-knit team there is behind the scenes at Makita. There’s such a great feeling of togetherness at the company. My journey so far has been an incredible whirlwind – and it’s actually my 8th anniversary with the company at the end of March.
Have you always worked in the construction industry? If not, how does it compare to other sectors?
I was new to construction but had had a variety of roles that, in their own way, really helped in terms of experiences that I draw on today. Before Makita, I ran a pub, worked on railways, as well as a role at a call centre and in media. All of my positions have been customer facing in some way, and have required strong interpersonal skills. I believe that if you can build strong relationships with your clients, anything is possible, whatever industry you’re in. Having said that, nothing quite compares to the power tool industry – it’s pretty unique.
What are the biggest challenges and most rewarding aspects of your role?
The biggest challenges come from planning major events, as having to liaise with multiple departments internally and externally can prove difficult at times just to make sure everything is organised correctly. Understandably, there’s a lot of pressure to make sure that health and safety has been properly planned for.
However, it’s also one of the most rewarding aspects of my role – the feeling of success that comes after these events is great. The Troy TMB show in 2023 was one I was particularly proud of. I had the chance to play a big part in the stand design.
I am also very lucky that I get to meet a variety of customers and end users across the industry, as I love interacting with people. I enjoy engaging with the end user in particular, listening to their stories and challenges and introducing them to the Makita platform. Being able to provide genuine solutions for a range of often incredibly unique needs is very rewarding.
What’s your favourite Makita tool and why?
It has to be the DTM52Z Multi-Tool. It’s just simply an incredibly versatile tool – with a huge range of applications, and it can be used for sanding and cutting. I’ve even used it to upcycle, creating a table for my outdoor bar! The DTM52Z is our premium multi-tool – it has low vibration levels, an important safety feature, thanks to the AVT technology it uses. In my opinion, every household should own one.
What is your second favourite Makita product?
The DTR180 – our Rebar Tying Tool. It heavily reduces the strain that other tools can put on your arms, and it is incredibly easy to use – even with one hand. It’s a great time-saving and safety-focused machine, and tying strength can be easily adjusted between 6 settings. Whilst I don’t personally own one, the technology and design of this machine blows my mind. It’s a fantastic tool.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I’m quite a busy man outside of work. I enjoy going to the gym and walking my two dogs. I also love to play football, including coaching goalkeepers. When you do find me at home, you’ll most likely find me in the kitchen. I love to cook.
